Herman “Pete” Doerge was born in 1937 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Willis and Alice Doerge. He grew up on the North Side of Pittsburgh and attended Perry High School, graduating cum laude in 1955. Determined and hardworking, Pete put himself through college, earning a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1960. He began his career at the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research and continued his education with graduate studies at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University).
Pete went on to work as a chemist at PPG Industries in Springdale, Pennsylvania, where he developed phenolic foams used for thermal insulation in mainly refrigerators. Over the course of his distinguished career with both PPG and later Bayer Corporation, he contributed to 48 original patents. He helped formulate foams that had improved performance, and were nontoxic and nonflammable, more environmentally-friendly, and cost-effective to produce. In 2003, the American Chemical Society recognized Pete’s pioneering work with a Regional Industrial Innovations Award, honoring his lifetime achievements in research and development.
In 1961, Pete married Bonita “Bonnie” Hollick, a registered nurse. Together, they built a warm and loving home and raised three children: William (“Bill”), Diana, and Julie. Pete’s sense of humor, steady presence, and generous heart were a foundation of his family. He delighted in family vacations to the forests and lakes of the Northeast and the sunlit shores of both coasts — adventures that brought joy, laughter, and cherished memories. Through life’s ups and downs, Pete was truly the family’s rock — wise, supportive, and steadfast.
Outside of work, Pete lived life with curiosity and joy. He loved playing softball and golf, and ping-pong and pool with his kids. He enjoyed solving crossword puzzles, reading science fiction, and engaging in thoughtful games of bridge and chess. His inquisitive, reflective nature inspired those around him to think deeply and live with intention.
In retirement, Pete and Bonnie lived in Florida and Arizona before settling in San Diego, California. There, they enjoyed being near their children and shared a growing interest in holistic health and spirituality, attending workshops and gatherings that enriched their lives and deepened their bond.
Pete is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bonnie, and their daughter, Julie. He is survived by his devoted children, Bill and Diana, who are inspired to carry forward his legacy of kindness, intelligence, and inner strength.
A private burial ceremony will be held at El Cajon Cemetery in California, where Pete will be laid to rest beside his wife and daughter.
